Memory appears to be a central issue in art today. There are themes of memory that constitute on their own a challenge to avoid rhetoric, others have the characteristic of being very little or not at all approached.
Always, artists are facingthe challenge ofmaking poetic acts out of these rediscoveries.The seminardescribes visual art works which concern history, historical research and its meaning today. It raises questions about the capacity of history to contribute to the interpretation of reality, and how the practice of historical research can be intended as an artistic act.

Theoretical partis followed by a workshop.

Biography

Cristiano Berti (Torino, 1967) is a visual artist with an unconventional background. After publishing papers on history of technology,from the mid-1990s he worked as outreach worker among migrant sex workers. In his artworks, he creates systems of signs and meanings in which formal appearance becomes more complex, contradictory, or ambiguous.He teaches at the Academy of Arts of Macerata. www.cristianoberti.it/eng/
